Derek Jean combines experience in the field, as Mechanical Engineer, Kayaking Expedition Leader, Wilderness Leadership Instructor and Youth at Risk Facilitator. Derek has over 15 years of Sailing and Navigation experience in the Great Lakes, British Columbia, Alaska and Jamaica. He attended the University of Waterloo for a bachelor's degree in the Applied Science of mechanical engineering in 2003.
Derek has demonstrated his proficiency in problem solving and project coordination as an engineer in the alternative fuels industry. His further training includes a design certificate in permaculture, lead kayak guide certification, heavy equipment operation, excavation, construction, machining and welding.
Derek is currently working amongst his peers in the Strait of Georgia to initiate a place-based education network, a skills development program, and a leadership network of mentors and students.
He is aiming to bring ocean piloting and navigation education to his work by achieving the internationally recognized RYA yachmaster's certification and applying it towards sustainable marine transportation and trade in BC.
